Starting your own business can be a daunting experience, and for many people it’s a big leap. It’s a chance to be your own boss. It’s a chance to learn about marketing, accounting, customer relations and much more. It’s also a chance to hold the key to your own future.

Throughout our ongoing series of Featured Business articles, our customers have shared their stories. Some find success quicker than others and some initially struggle to make things work.

One key to setting up a business is finding the inspiration to get things started and to be motivated enough to keep things going. Is it a quote, a mantra, a calling in life, or just logic that gives someone that drive?

As we look back on the past 12 months, we share some of our customers’ favourite motivational business quotes. We hope these nuggets of wisdom will inspire you in your business journey.

At the Network Ireland Awards, Miriam O’Callaghan was the MC. She said something that her dad had said: “You go out there and don’t be afraid of them [your colleagues, peers, etc] – let them be afraid of you.”
Anna Holland, FCS Services

“If I had nine hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first six sharpening my axe.” Just be prepared … Then you’ll do it easily.
Laura Sinnott, Wexford Home Preserves

An aunt-in-law, who was a woman in business in the 1950s and 1960s when times were tough, she always reckoned that so many businesses failed as they lacked “stick-at-it-ness”.
Gerry Giggins, Farm Tours Ireland

Revenue is for vanity. Profits are for sanity.
John Bohan, Apex Fund Services

The best way to predict the future is to make the future. The minute you’re satisfied with where you are, you’re not there anymore.
Sharon O’Donoghue, Brook Catering

“Spend twice as time much preparing the ground, i.e. digging the hole, as you do on the plant.” To me that’s a very fundamental philosophical position to maintain insofar as if you only focus on your product or service, you may miss other important aspects. So if you could clear the ground by preparing the business – the finance, the marketing – when you come to deliver your product or service, everything else will work.
Owen Chubb, Owen Chubb Garden Landscapes LTD

“If your ship doesn’t come in, swim out to meet it.” Jonathan Winters.
Kira Walton, VOYA Products

There’s one that my dad always says: “100% of nothing is still nothing”. It’s about taking care of everyone around you and working as a team to achieve success.
Eamon Moore, E-MIT Solutions

People buy the story not the product. What we do, it’s the story people buy.
Paul O’Sullivan, Irelands Eye Knitwear

Never look back and regret your failures, put your energy back into the next big venture. A setback is not a bad experience, just a learning curve.
Niall McClean, Monaghan Music & Piano Centre

Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn: “If you’re not half embarrassed by your product by the time it goes out you’ve left it too late.”
Michael Fitzgerald, OnePageCRM

“Fortune favours the brave” is the one you have to have.
Daire Harlin, Brú Brewery

“Try not to become a man of success but rather to become a man of value” [Albert Einstein]. We’ve always built our company around the adage that we need to be providing real value to our customers if we are going to grow as a business.
Patrick Garry, LoyLap

The staff is the company.
Linda Murphy, All In Care

I gave myself one: “People make business, business does not make people.” I don’t know a single business that ever manufactured a human being. But I know lots and lots of people who built businesses.
Bart Glover, Kay’s Kitchen

“The harder you work, the luckier you get.” It’s so true. One of the quotes I use – it’s not so much motivational as organisational, and is again from one of the courses with AIB – is “Eat the frog.” Get the worst task of your “To do” list off your desk, first thing.
